Runner of the Week (10-11-13)

How long have you been running?
I started running August 2010, so just passed my 3 year anniversary!

What/who motivated you to start running?
I had recently moved to Las Vegas, was overweight and unhappy with myself. On a walk with a friend we were talking and decided to try the Couch 2 5K program. The rest is history!

What’s something that you can’t run without?
Out here in Vegas, WATER! Other than that, I’d say my favorite shoes. I can run with or without music, with or without something to check my pace, so really, a running outfit, my shoes, and water… I am good to go.
What is your favorite race you have ever done or place to run?
I have two favorite races. In November 2012 a few cousins and I ran the Philadelphia Half/Full Marathon together. Two of us ran the half, 2 ran the full. We had all recently started running journeys within the last few years, for various reasons. To meet up with them and celebrate our journeys was amazing. 
This past June, I was running the San Francisco Half Marathon, part of the course is out and back on the Golden Gate Bridge. I have always been terrified of bridges, but really wanted to check this race off my list, to conquer this. My brother decided to run it with me. 13.1 miles with my brother alongside me, keeping me focused so I wouldn’t panic on the bridge, was one of the greatest races. Not because I conquered the bridge or had a great finish time, but because I just hung out with my little brother for 13.1 miles. He was a great support that day!

What is the best advice you would give a beginning runner?
Don’t quit. When I started running I was over 200 lbs, everything hurt, running for 60 seconds seemed like an eternity. Some moments, I hated it. But, I stuck with it, I saw little improvements. Before I knew it I was running for 10 minutes straight, stick with it, it’s so worth it. Also, get fitted for proper shoes, it will be the smartest decision you ever make.
